Authorities reported they were notified by a man who found a car in Hanau smeared with red-colored substance

Around 50 cars have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to law enforcement.

Vehicles, building surfaces and postboxes were marked, in some cases with swastikas, they stated in a release.

Police report they were contacted late on Wednesday, when a resident noticed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a reddish substance.

The substance had been placed in the pattern of a swastika, they added.

Law enforcement then discovered many other marked cars and house walls in the surrounding area.

Swastikas are illegal in Germany under laws prohibiting the public display of Nazi-era symbols.

Law enforcement state initial examinations suggest the fluid was likely blood from a person.

"Currently there is no lead as to its origin; officials are presently not aware of any injuries in association with the incident," they stated.

City officials stated they were attempting "to solve the case" and have asked to the public for tips.

An important representative said the vandalism left him speechless and required to be resolved rapidly.

"This incident affects the center of Hanau and revives the trauma of the right-wing terrorist attack in 2020," he posted on social media, mentioning the killing of nine individuals by a gunman aiming at residents of immigrant origin in five years prior.
