The Global Health Body Sounds Alert Over Critical Scarcity of Obesity Injections

Fewer than one in 10 people that would benefit from obesity jabs such as Wegovy are able to get them, states the global health agency as it publishes its first guidance on the therapies.

Given in excess of 1,000,000,000 individuals worldwide currently living with obesity, it is urging broader and more equitable access to GLP-1 medication.

Per estimates, over two billion will be obese by 2030 unless action is taken.

"The latest guidelines affirms that excess weight is a chronic disease that can be managed with comprehensive and lifelong care," said the agency's head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

High costs, limited production capacity, and distribution challenges are major hurdles to widespread access to the treatments that can assist patients in reducing substantial weight, says the organization.

Weight-Loss Drug Scarcity

Even in the current best projected outlook, the manufacturing of these medications would only suffice for approximately 100 million people – less than 10% of those who need them, according to the WHO.

The advice calls on countries and companies to increase availability, via strategies including patent sharing.

A patent on semaglutide – the core ingredient of Novo Nordisk's Wegovy – is set to lapse in several countries in 2026.

The Way Obesity Jabs Work

GLP-1 drugs replicate a biological compound to delay gastric emptying, reduce hunger and boost satiety so users consume fewer calories.

Individuals commonly start to lose weight in the initial weeks of beginning the regular doses.

Studies indicates patients may see weight return a year later of discontinuing the treatment, when their typical appetite resume.

Being overweight or obese raises your likelihood for contracting health problems, like diabetes, cardiovascular issues, stroke, and some malignancies.

Excess weight concerns people in all nations and was responsible for millions of deaths worldwide in 2024, as per the health agency.
